Nutrition
It’s not my goal to reinvent the wheel. Many wiser people have gone before me and done the research into nutrition. My only nutrition class in college ended very badly. After many years of searching for the “perfect” diet, I have come to believe that we are to eat as our ancestors ate;rich nutrient dense foods. And in doing so, we must remember we are all individuals with individual needs.I have been diagnosed with an “incurable” infectious disease called Lyme Disease plus 3 co-infections. In my pursuit of what ales me, I began searching the world of nutrition. I believe that my health “cure” lies in the world of food. Whether it’s raw dairy or fresh organic veggies, lacto-fermented foods, grassfed meats or herbalism; nutrient dense food is important to me. The Weston A. Price Foundation and Sally Fallon have influenced the way we eat through Sally’s book, Nourishing Traditions referred to as NT.
Make sure you check out The Herbwife’s Kitchen on my blogroll, she is a kindred spirit in herbs and nutrition. Her fermented Zucchini Pickles sound great. I can’t wait to try them this year with those monster zucchini I manage to grow. Sometimes they’re as big as my thigh! Now that’s some serious time away from the garden, although I think in the summer they grow like gangbusters overnight.
Also take a look at Mother Linda’s site on my blogroll. She too cooks with traditional foods that are nutrient dense. Her lovely site reminded me of my grandma who came from the “old country”; Austria Hungary. My grandma loved cooking with cabbage which was always either very hot or sweet, she also made lots of goulash. My love for food, flowers and fibers all came from my grandma. Now that sounds kinda catchy; food, flowers and fibers!
Another wonderful researcher in the field of nutrition is Amanda Rose, on my blogroll under Rebuilding From Depression. Not only has she researched the area of how nutrition plays a roll in our mental health, but she is funny at doing so. She is a rugged mountain woman with many adventurous stories. Please make sure you visit her.
It’s because of Amanda Rose that I now love to eat chicken livers and onions cooked in lard. She recommends eating liver 3x wk as a depression buster food. I’m not sure I’d go that far. I like it at least once a week.
