Fiber Art

p1010618.jpgp1010623.jpgAlpaca Fair Isle HatI learned to knit when I was 10 yrs old. Of course my first project was a scarf which was long and full of holes. Knitting for me is very therapeutic. Spinning wool is even more therapeutic while the rhythm of the pedal goes up and down. During the sickest yr of my life (2005) , I spun and knit to find the way out of the incurable disease that was ravaging my body and eating my brain away. I did find my way only by following the light of Jesus. As I began to knit hats I realized that if I couldn’t do anything else I could at least do this. So I knit and I knit….the result was over 30 vibrant colorful hats for kids and adults. Color then became another therapy I used to recover my health. I would tell folks it was like Prozac to me. And so out of this pit of despair, I started a small non-profit business; Butterflies and Bumble Bees. I’m still working on a website, several of the FREE sites have not worked well and since I’m non-profit, I have to find a host that will be affordable. For now I can be reached at butterfliesandbumblebeesshop@gamil.com

Right now I’m working on a new Dye Pot of colors. Nature inspires me and with the beautiful colors of Spring, I have so much to work with. I have a friend who raises Scottish Black Faced Sheep (not sure if that’s the real name), and she’s offered me all her raw fiber. I plan to send it off for processing and then I’ll try my hand at dyeing the roving with wonderful vibrant colors that can either be spun into lovely yarn or used for felting. So much fiber and so little time!

  1. Hi

I empathize with you. I had Lyme’s disease and know how painful it is even to knit. I think my short term memory has been compromised. I knit to relax and to ease the stresses of the day.

I love your hat. Is it your original or from a pattern. I would be interested in making one too.

  2. Thanks Mary, by the Grace of God I’m really doing well and able to accomplish a lot. My daughter used graph paper to plot the snowflake pattern and I just made the rest up as I went along. Sorry no pattern to pass on right now. That one was made with Alpaca and a teenage girl bought it at an October Festival.

Check out my blog “Herb Village” I talk about an herb that I’m using and studies have shown that it improves memory. Best to you.
    Diane
